Join us at Bloody Elbow tonight at Midnight ET/9 p.m. PT for discussion of the ninth episode of The Ultimate Fighter Brazil. The show will be aired on Globo in Brazil, and UFC.com everywhere else (some countries are blacked out, but the United States and Canada are good to go). Last week's third middleweight bout saw Team Belfort's Thaigo Bodao defeat Team Silva's Francisco Drinaldo by TKO at the end of the second round when Drinaldo was forced to retire. This put Belfort's team up 6-1 with one middleweight bout to go. Silva also brought up the bout between Gasparzinho and Rony Jason again, pointing out that he would never fight a teammate and that Bel...

After months of anticipation, the UFC 146 fight week is finally here. The May 26th event in Las Vegas features an all-heavyweight main card with a title fight on top, as UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos meets former champ Frank Mir. Another former champion, Cain Velasquez, will look to bounce back from dropping the title when he faces off with ex-Strikeforce monster Antonio Silva in the co-main event. Here's a rundown of what appears to be the final card: May 26th, live on PPV from Las Vegas, NV: ...

Two men that desperately need a win will face off in a featherweight battle at UFC on Fox 4 on August 4th in Los Angeles. Both have had a lot of success outside the UFC, but it's been rough going into the octagon thus far. MMA Fighting has the news: A featherweight bout has been added to the UFC's fourth outing on FOX as Michihiro Omigawa is set to face Manny Gamburyan as part of the UFC on FOX 4 fight card. Sources close to the situation confirmed ...

I'm not sure if you forgot, but UFC 146 is this Saturday, and to remind you of it, Zuffa has released a unique video for the event. I don't know what is going on, but to put it nicely, let's just say that the UFC has just made an "unconventional" and retro promo video for this weekend's card stacked with heavyweights. See for yourself: The video was released today, but it's already a bit outdated as they still have the injured Mark Hunt on the promo. Check out the adjusted and final fight card after the jump. May 26th, live on PPV from Las Vegas, NV: Main Card: ...

The title of this series, "Gods of War", is inspired by the ancient Greek and Roman belief that mortals who accomplished great feats of martial skill would be deified and brought to live among the gods. This series will profile fighters that have transcended their martial art, be it grappling or striking, to become modern day Gods of War. Joining our Pantheon of modern day martial arts legends next to grappling ace Braulio Estima is the father of Kyokushin Karate, Masutatsu Oyama. A man who sought to instill toughness, focus, and power in himself as well as students, Oyama is a legend in the karate community. Karate is the most popular martial art in the world and is commonly associated with...

UFC 146 heavyweight Stefan Struve is blogging on MMA Fighting in the leadup to his bout next Saturday. His first blog earlier this week was about his path to MMA and his admiration for then-opponent Mark Hunt. But the day after it was posted, Struve found out that Hunt was out of the bout with an injury and Lavar Johnson would be taking his ...

Here's an awesome photo from Esther Lin of the preliminary card battle between Isaac Vallie-Flagg and Gesias Cavalcante at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier last night. You can check some more of her great work from the event over at the Showtime Sports website. ...

Daniel Cormier put a beating on Josh Barnett last night in Strikeforce. Barnett looked to be in excellent shape, to have improved his striking and all around looked like a very skilled Heavyweight, and it just didn't matter as Cormier won every single round very clearly. The win puts Cormier at 10-0 and his prospects are looking extremely bright. As mentioned ...
Nathan "The12ozCurls" Smith With recent events involving a UFC fighter and alcohol grabbing the spotlight, we at CP figured we’d lighten the mood a tad with this new Budweiser commercial. From a stare down between Anderson Silva and Steven Seagal to Lyoto Machida making a cameo as he flees the scene, this commercial has it all. When I sa...

(Video: YouTube/420FriendlyMMAFan) We've still got a week to go before our heavyweight title fight at UFC 146, but all of the excitement already has people losing their damn minds. Frank Mir and Junior Dos Santos will clash to determine who is the 'baddest man on the planet'...at least for another 3-4 months until he inevitably loses the title to the next challenger. Enough dilly-dallying, let's get to this week's installment of UFC Primetime. ...

Mauro haters, hit mute now. Actually, everyone hit mute and read what I say about the fights below. (Video: YouTube/ShoSports) Bruised and battered. Cut and bloodied. Josh Barnett's face wasn't one of a man who got out-wrestled last night. Olympic-level or not, wrestling doesn't leave you looking like you put your head through a meat grinder. Don't get me wrong, he did get out-wrestled last night, he just got out-struck as well. He got out-everythinged, if you want to get technical. It didn't have to be that way, of course. A lot of men would have wilted earlier--much earlier--in the onslaught of Daniel Cormier's attack. But Barnett never thought of taking the easy way out, and today his face testifies to the evolving game of Cormier. The AKA product showed great versatility in his striking, staggering Barnett with heavy hands, head kicks, and knees. His combinati...

(The time for talking is over. The time for looking into a camera and screaming has just begun. Photo via Esther Lin/SHO Sports.) If you had told me 16 months ago that the Strikeforce 2011-2012 Heavyweight Grand Prix would conclude with an unheralded reserve-fighter ending up in the finals, and tournament favorite ...

When we last saw Maiquel Falcao and Andreas Spang in the cage with each other, the two nearly started brawling during a post-fight interview at Bellator 66. Anticipation for their main event clash at last night's Bellator 69 from Lake Charles, Louisiana was high, even though Falcao initially missed weight for their bout. The dust has settled, and the event produced this season's middleweight tournament champion,...

(Video props: YouTube/MMAVictor) There's nothing new about Bob Sapp losing a fight without dignity, but every week he seems to hone his craft as an MMA-Theatre master thespian. A typical Sapp fight consists of him lumbering in toward his opponent, waiting until he feels incidental contact, then feigning a tko until the ref halts the bout. Wash-Rinse-Repeat. But last night he may have sunk to a new low in his bout...

I'm not touching this one. *Innocently whistles* *Walks Away* Props to reader Johnnyozone22 for the tip. This doesn't look good, folks. Initially reported by TMZ.com and confirmed by Josh Gross, UFC Light-Heavyweight champion Jon Jones has been arrested in Binghamton, New York on DUI charges after totaling his Bentley. From TMZ: Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... Jones was involved in an accident at around 5:00 AM in Binghamton, NY. We're told the car -- which Jones crashed into a pole -- was totaled and cops arrested Jones ...

By Elias Cepeda We've got two quarter final match ups today so let’s jump right in. From Coach Dominick Cruz’ team we have Vinc Pichel taking on Coach Urijah Faber’s Chris Saunders. After that, Team Faber teammates Al Iaquinta and Andy Ogle lock up. At the end of the episode, injured ...

(Video: TMZ.com. Props to reader Jeff Willson--Salem Oregon--for the tip) If you haven't followed Dan Quinn's insanity over the years, you've been missing out. The man may very well be MMA's most tortured mind, and that's seriously saying something. Things started off simply enough with him issuing YouTube challenges to the UFC's best, bragging about his hands and his accomplishments in college football. Then he,...

(Video via YouTube.com/AllElbows) It may have lost some steam along the way, but the Heavyweight Grand Prix, Strikeforce's little engine that could, is pulling into the station this evening. Tournament finalists Daniel Cormier and Josh Barnett will slug it out to decide who rules the now-defunct Strikeforce Heavyweight division and get their face plastered on one of those cheesy ...

Daniel Cormier just shocked the world – or at least the world of PRIDE fanboys – by blanking Josh Barnett on two out of three judges’ cards. A third judge gave Josh one round, possibly out of pity. It’s hard to believe this is the same Daniel Cormier that stunk it up against Jeff Monson [...]...

Saturday night’s co-main event featured Gilbert Melendez defending his strap against Josh Thomson, and it was a pretty entertaining battle that saw Melendez take a ‘controversial’ split decision win. I’m not really sure what all the controversy is about … Mel won rounds 1, 2, and 3 while Thomson took 4 and 5. All that [...]...

Part 1 of that Budweiser commercial featuring Andy S and Steve Seagull we told you about yesterday. Love the Bruce Buffer cameo!

A couple of Brazilian comedians show up at Spot Jorgenson’s gym and ask him to work them over. He obliges, with entertaining results.

Tonight! The end of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Not So Grand Prix, Gilbert Melendez vs Josh Thomson the Third, and Mr Inconsistent Rafael Cavalcante vs Mr Scumbag Mike Kyle. I’m watching for the Barnett / Cormier fight, although for all my whinging I’m sure Melendez / Thomson will be a sweet scrap too. Josh Barnett vs. [...]...

No rest for our favorite one trick pony, Cody McKenzie. Via MMA Frenzy: The UFC announced today that Cody McKenzie is headed south to featherweight and that Chad Mendes will serve as his welcoming committee. The two will do battle at the UFC 148 event, which is scheduled to take place on July 7 at [...]...

Gareth A Davies takes time away from combing his luscious hair to guess who will be the coaches for The Ultimate Fighter UK vs OZ: Pearson, from Sunderland, would not confirm the details to The Telegraph yesterday, but the match-up makes sense as even though both fighters no longer train in their respective countries, Sotiropoulos [...]...

King Mo doesn’t get why he’s so darned misunderstood: Why you so offended?  I spoke my mind, Twitter, Facebook – it’s there for us and I feel like they were trying to twist my words.  Granted I shouldn’t have called her a bitch but I call everybody a bitch in twitter.  This aint the 80s [...]...
Many of those fighters taking part in UFC on Fuel 3 were dealt medical suspensions by the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation recently. The two at the head of the list are Jeremy Stephens and Johnny Eduardo who both suffered eye injuries and are on indefinite leave. Stephens and Eduardo, however, can be [...]...

The final four men from the UFC’s inaugural attempt at a “real time” format of TUF are now in place after the remaining quartet of competitors took to the cage this past Friday night. Emerging with a victory in tow were Al Iaquinta and Vinc Pichel though the similarities stopped there where performances were concerned. [...]...

Entering last night’s Strikeforce event the questions surrounding lightweight Josh Thomson had to do with his health after rumors of a knee injury surfaced a little more than a week ago. Exiting his fight with champion Gilbert Melendez the chatter was not focused on how his leg had held up but rather whether the ringside [...]...

It didn’t take long for the UFC to announce Mike Easton will take the place of Renan Barao and meet Ivan Menjivar at UFC 148. Barao was promoted to an interim UFC bantamweight title-match with Urijah Faber at the July 7 card after champion Dominick Cruz went down with a torn ACL. The UFC announced [...]...

Unfortunately, it appears Josh Barnett was not alone in breaking his hand during last night’s exciting effort in the Strikeforce Grand Prix Final as opponent Daniel Cormier has come forward to say he also exited the bout with a battered mitt. Like Barnett, Cormier claimed the injury occurred in the opening round of action but [...]...

It wasn’t much, but UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones broke his silence late Saturday night following a difficult day for young star. Early Saturday morning police were called to investigate an accident in which Jones apparently drove his Bentley into a utility pole, causing plenty of damage. “Bones” was booked and sent to jail [...]...

It’s a busy week in the MMA world between UFC on Fuel 3 and Strikeforce Grand Prix Final but Rebellion MMA Radio hosts Mitch Ciccarelli and Bryan Levick aren’t taking a break to bask in all the caged glory. This Sunday night the show welcomes two talented competitors who call the UFC home in the [...]...

It was a long, occasionally bumpy ride to arrive at tonight’s Strikeforce Grand Prix Final but not necessarily an unrewarding one with the eventual pay-off worth the wait. Throughout the year-plus build fans have witnessed the destruction of Fedor Emelianenko, a few beautifully brutal knockouts, and the emergence of unbeaten heavyweight Daniel Cormier as a [...]...

Submission-specialist Cody McKenzie will waste little time between fights, as the inventor of the “McKenzie-tine” has agreed to face former title-contender Chad Mendes at UFC 148 despite having fought earlier this week at UFC on Fuel 3. Were the short turnaround not enough, McKenzie will also be making his featherweight debut in the fight giving [...]...

The Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix is finally coming to an end tonight, and although it’s going to be a short one, it’s time for my breakdown of the card. First, some quick preliminary picks… James Terry defeats Bobby Green via Unanimous Decision Quinn Mulhern defeats Yuri Villefort via Submission Round 3 Gian Villante defeats Derrick [...]...
Sometimes when the the world is on your shoulders and you lose your fight to become the best 115 pound woman fighter in the world or break your hand in the first thirty seconds of the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix finals and lose for the first time in years, you have a right to feel down. But we all know what Spiderman's uncle Michael Caine told us: 'It's not in how you fall down but the responsibility in how you pick yourself up with your great powers'. That's why it's a beautiful thing to see these two legendary warriors of our time reunited in defeat, and with their bruised heads held high. Josh Barnett just tweeted this out moments ago. ...

There's nothing I could say about last night's Strikeforce title fight of Gilbert Melendez vs. Josh Thomson that hasn't already been said by UGer, Neil McCauley, in this thread on The Underground. In just one swift post, the guy encapsulated my entire belief system regarding the outcome of Melendez's sixth consecutive title defense. This Neil McCauley then went on to make an even more accurate statement within the message board thread, securing my complete admiration for his way of thought. I'm sure he's probably a giant dork normally, but last night he was a friggin' superstar. The truth is, no one in the UFC can run through Josh Thomson, and people that expected Gilbert to completely demolish a...

[div class="notice" class2="icon"]The following is from an article on FighterXFashion.com, part of the MiddleEasy Network.[/div] Following the crowning of a new Heavyweight Grand Prix champ in Daniel Cormier, and a lightweight championship battle between Gilbert Melendez and Josh Thomson, here’s a look at a few of the walkout shirts that were worn at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier. New styles included Cormier’s signature DC walkout shirt from TrauMMA, as well as Melendez’s “El Nino” signature tee by TapouT. Outfitting Thomson for his match against Melendez, RYU had “The Punk” representing in the RYU Signature tee, paired up with the Tanto Compression shorts and Warrior Hoodie from the S...

After shooting a Muay Thai show in Flushing, NY this weekend, I noticed a man with half his head shaved leaving the venue.  He literally buzzed half of his head down the middle.  At first, I thought maybe he could only afford half a haircut, which would be incredibly unfortunate, but then I figured that’s probably the joke the rest of the world makes when they see it.  I decided he’s a time traveler who arrived in 2012 from the distant future, and we’re all the weird ones with uniform style haircuts.  His Jordan XXXI’s were a dead giveaway.  When he left the venue, he was actually returning to his time machine, and he now knows what Muay Thai looked like before it became the biggest sport in the world, back before promoters stabbed each other in the face with a metaphorical ice pick.  The Zuffa's creative department has a similar time machine, and t...

It could've been that adventurers around the world were slaying the dark lords in Diablo 3, thereby weakening Josh Barnett, or it could be that Daniel Cormier is just that good. Frighteningly good, and with this convincing victory over The Warmaster the coming out party is complete; Daniel Cormier is a huge problem for anyone at heavyweight or light heavyweight and should be feared accordingly. From the outset Cormier threw the enchanted anvils he calls fists at the head of Barnett, connecting with loud, audible thuds and smacks. Barnett responded to the relatively small demigod before him with flurries of his own, but gets absolutely outclassed on his feet by the Olympic wrestler. As the fight goes on, Barnett succumbs to a Cormier takedown then eats a few extremely hard elbows, opening up multiple ...

There are big budget seventy five minute Hollywood action movies that aren't as entertaining and high-octane as the Melendez/Thomson trilogy. Yep, they did it again. Another twenty five minute MMA spectacle that went up, down and all around the cage in a fittingly drama filled finale. Hundreds of strikes were thrown, submissions were threatened and a split decision victory was awarded to Gilbert Melendez amongst the boos of the San Jose crowd. Fifteen rounds of Gilbert/Thomson and we still want more. The only way to satisfy my craving for more Melendez/Thomson action is by watching all three fights in a row right now while skipping rope and drinking Nos. It seems like the right thing to do. Here's the Twitterverse's reaction to the split decision nod to Gil. ...

If you give Feijao thirty three seconds he will knee you in the face, punch you a dozen times then hop on your neck and make you tap for your life so he can get on with his day and do whatever a frightening light heavyweight named 'Bean' does on a Saturday evening in San Jose. This is the type of performance we have come to expect from the Black House pupil and former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion - pure bean violence. '33' usually makes me think of the back of ...

One day archaeologists will dig deep enough into the earth to find cave drawings or possibly even ancient manuscripts detailing how the human race pwnd all other indigenous species into submission with their elbows. It's clear that after thousands of years of domestication and mating with monkeys did our elbows become rounded and sissified, what a shame. The human race blew it. Instead of dropping bombs and shooting each other we could have had Braveheart style battles with thousands of fierce warriors looking like they are doing the chicken dance all the way to their brutal deaths. Thankfully, we have combat sports. Thailand never forgot about using the joint that connects their forearm and humerus of the upper arm (the point of the elbow is actually called the 'olecranon' which sounds really badass), and slowly but surely we are seeing an ...

[div class="notice" class2="icon"]The following is from an article on LiverKick.com, part of the MiddleEasy Network.[/div] K-1 and Glory are both bringing top notch 70kg kickboxing tournaments to the world very soon. They've compiled most of the best 70kg fighters from around the world, despite the talent being split down the middle as K-1 and Glory competed for fighters. Familiar faces from the old K-1 MAX days are still here, along with many fighters that are getting their first opportunity in a massive 70kg tournament for a big promotion. As I said before, K-1 and Glory got most of the top 70kg fighters, but I feel that there's a few who were left out, and I'm going to run them down. Click 'Read more' to see eight fighters who I believe are missing from K-1 and Glory's 70...

Life is a constant pursuit into the land of the unknown -- and ultimately Steven Seagal will meet you at the end and slap you in the face for not executing a low kick properly. I'm not sure what Rampage Jackson was talking about in his interview with Ariel Helwani, but Steven Seagal is the real alpha male. When video of Anderson Silva training with Steven Seagal surfaced, everyone guffawed at the notion that Seagal would have anything to teach Silva. One front kick later, everyone claimed that it was a mere coincidence Seagal taught him his 'deadly moves', even after Anderson Silva admitted it inside the octagon. Lyoto Machida executes roughly the same front kick on Randy Couture's face, gives Seagal his props on the microphone in his post-fight interview and people still disregard the geni...
The ninth episode of "The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil" is available tonight at en.tuf.tv beginning at midnight ET/9 p.m. PT. While filmed in Portuguese, the video includes English subtitles. This serves as tonight's discussion thread for the episode, which features the continuation of this season's middleweight and featherweight tournaments. Follow along with the first-ever international edition of "TUF," and discuss it in the comments section of this thread. We'll then have an episode recap posted following the show's conclusion. ...

Daniel Cormier's grand-prix championship, GIlbert Melendez's narrow win over Josh Thomson, and Jon Jones' DUI arrest were all popular topics in this week's edition of The Sunday Junkie. In the latest installment of our weekly reader-feedback feature, MMAjunkie.com readers discuss all aspects of those storylines. But this week's winner, Ottawa's "GraveConern," instead focused on MMA's often-unsung (but frequently criticized) referees, specifically Bellator 69's Jason Herzog. ...

In anticipation of this week's big UFC 146 event, the UFC has released another home-run preview video.  Check out the clip, which has an easily identifiable old-school feel.  UFC 146 takes place Saturday, and the clip focuses on the 10 heavyweight fighters who compete on the pay-per-view main card, including champion Junior Dos Santos and fellow headliner Frank Mir. ...

Daniel Cormier has faced his share of battles, and that doesn't even include Saturday's grueling "Strikeforce: Heavyweight Grand Prix Final" win over fellow tournament finalist Josh Barnett. After a life fraught with personal tragedies, Cormier admits his recent success feels all the sweeter. So despite a broken hand, he anxiously awaits his return to the cage, which could come by year's end ...

Following an ACL injury he recently revealed to MMAjunkie.com Radio, Gegard Mousasi won't be back in the cage anytime soon. And that's just fine with his likely next opponent, who's expected to fight Mousasi for Strikeforce's vacant light-heavyweight title. Following a grueling training camp, Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante - who made quick work of Mike Kyle at Saturday's Strikeforce event - is looking for a little rest and relaxation before his tentative title fight with Mousasi, a fellow ex-champ. ...

After 15 months, the Strikeforce World Heavyweight Grand Prix has finally come to an end.  At Saturday's Strikeforce event, Daniel Cormier scored a lopsided points victory over fellow finalist Josh Barnett to win the tourney championship.  Showtime has now released video highlights of the fight, as well as post-fight interviews with other winners from the event's main card. ...

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The "rock star" is returning.  Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is expected to return in late summer at a currently unannounced card, likely in August. Rousey, who's quickly become on of the sport's biggest stars, is expected to defend her title against former champ Sarah Kaufman at the Showtime-televised event. ...

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Josh Barnett immediately went to the hospital after a grueling five-round fight that saw Daniel Cormier earn a unanimous-decision victory to win the Strikeforce world heavyweight grand prix. Barnett broke his left hand in the first round of the fight and had it set in a splint by a doctor, who said it was not a "spiral" break, manager Leland LaBarre told MMAjunkie.com early Sunday morning. An orthopedist now will determine the extent of the damage, after which the fighter and his rep will decide what's next. ...

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Finding motivation to fight Josh Thomson wasn't the grand struggle it was made out to be for Gilbert Melendez. "It's tough to get motivated sometimes just because if I was on the other end of the stick and I got a good opportunity, it's a lot easier to get motivated," he said after a close decision victory over Thomson at "Strikeforce: Heavyweight Grand Prix Final." Finding momentum during the fight was a different story. ...

A long-rumored matchup for Strikeforce's vacant welterweight title is now official. Strikeforce broadcasters announced during Saturday night's "Strikeforce: Heavyweight Grand Prix Final" that Nate Marquardt and Tyron Woodley will meet on July 14 with the belt on the line. The card, which also features Strikeforce middleweight champ Luke Rockhold defending his belt against Tim Kennedy, takes place at Rose Garden in Portland, Ore. The evening's main card airs on Showtime and prelims air on Showtime Extreme. ...
The intersection of Grand Blvd. and Helen Street in Binghamton, N.Y., is where the squeaky-clean image of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones came to a crashing end over the weekend. And the some. Jones was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) shortly after he went toe-to-toe with a telephone pole in the early morning hours of Sat., May 19, 2012, and lost ... big time. The good news is that no major i...

A featherweight fracas has been added to the UFC on Fox 4: "Stann vs. Lombard" event on Aug. 4, 2012, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, as the struggling Manny Gamburyan will take on Michihiro Omigawa. MMAFighting.com brought word of the pending bout last night. Gamburyan is likely on his last legs with the world's largest fight promotion, as he's lost both of his two fights since rejoining the UFC. Actually, dating back to his previous run with the promotion, "The Anvil" has won inside the Octagon in four fights. ...

It has always troubled me that Strikeforce used Mike Kyle, because he's probably the dirtiest fighter in the history of the game, with a disturbing track record to prove it (you could also make a good case for Gilbert Yvel, who compiled an impressive body of foul-plagued work). That's why it was a pleasure to see Kyle taken out quickly last night (Sat., May 19, 2012) at the Strikeforce: "Barnett vs. Cormier" event in San Jose by...

Given the chaos that plagued the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix, the tournament finale that took place last night (Sat., May 19, 2012) in San Jose, California, featuring Daniel Cormier vs. Josh Barnett was a pleasantly entertaining capper, if for no other reason than there were so many distracting chapters outside the cage preceding it. With its kickoff in Feb. 2011, the grand prix marked a kind of all-in move for Strikeforce, which, at the time, was clearly losing the marginal ground it was holding against the overwhelming onslaught of success of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Market sh...

Strikeforce: "Barnett vs. Cormier" took place last night (Sat., May 19, 2012) from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, featuring Daniel Cormier dominating Josh Barnett over five rounds and 25 minutes to become the heavyweight grand prix tournament champion. It's just too bad both guy...

It was a situation where most fighters would have reacted with bitterness, especially given the stakes at hand. But with a belt on the line, and the charged rubber match of his thoroughly entertaining trilogy against Gilbert Melendez barely in the rear-view mirror, Josh Thomson had lost by the closest of margins -- one point on a split decision -- and yet was all class. Despite a booing San Jose, California, crowd last night (Sat., May 19, 2012) at the HP Pavilion, Thomson urged them to s...

When Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz suffered a knee injury, a replacement opponent for Urijah Faber was sought and quickly found in the form of Renan Barao. That meant the Brazilians originally scheduled opponent, Ivan Menjivar, was left without a dance partner over the Independence Day weekend. It's a good thing Mike Easton was available and taking bookings, as he's stepped up to fill the void on the UFC 148: "Silva vs. Sonnen 2" fight card scheduled for J...

It took 16 months to get there, but Strikeforce was finally able to seal the deal on their Heavyweight grand prix tournament last night (Sat., May 19, 2012) in San Jose, California. Strikeforce: "Barnett vs. Cormier" marked the end of the tournament, as well as the end of the division as well, with Ultimate Fighting Ch...

What a difference a year makes. In 2009, Jamie Varner was the defending WEC lightweight champion. In 2010, Varner lost the title to Benson Henderson via third round guillotine choke, had battled to an inexplicable draw with Kamal Shalorus, lost a “Fight of the Night” rematch by decision to rival Donald Cerrone, and suffered a first round submission loss in the final WEC event to Shane Roller. Last year, Varner returned to smaller circuit shows, ...

When Strikeforce’s Heavyweight Grand Prix began 16 months ago, Daniel Cormier was just a promising up and comer and not a member of the tournament’s field of eight. Saturday night at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Cormier became the Grand Prix champ after defeating Josh Barnett by way of a near-shutout five round unanimous decision that announced his arrival as one of mixed martial arts’ premier big men.Scores were 50-45 twice and 49-46 for Cormier, a two-time US Olympic wrestler who replaced Alistair Overeem in the tourney and never looked back, scoring consecutive victories over Antonio Silva and Barnett to t...

Duane “Bang” Ludwig is just like you, with one exception: he’s a world renowned kickboxer and mixed martial artist. The Denver, Colorado native is a husband, a father, a small business owner (303 Training Center in Westminster, CO), and simply a guy who wants to own a house. On the other hand, he is also the proud owner of the fastest knockout in UFC history, but that title nor the litany of Muay Thai belts that he refers to as “closet stuffers” have not altered the down-to-Earth individual he is outside of the cage, regardless of how popular he is in it.“I still have a mortgage and car payments,” tells Ludwig. “I still live fight to fight....

Melendez Survives Late Rally by Thomson, Retains Lightweight Belt Not surprisingly, Gilbert Melendez and Josh Thomson gave fight fans five rounds of high level mixed martial arts in their rubber match at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California Saturday night. But what may have been shocking to those same fans was how close Thomson came to unseating the longtime Strikeforce lightweight champion before losing an unpopular split decision.Scores were 48-47 twice, and 47-48 for Melendez, who defeated Thomson in 2009 and lost to him in 2008. All three bouts ended in five round decisions.“We know each other real well, and it’s a battle of the bay,” said San Francisco’s Melendez. “He’s a tough guy as a...

With regular recapper and national treasure Dan Downes stuck at an all-day "Engagement Enrichment" retreat, this week's rehashing duties fall to the second string. Two live fights and one big announcement are supposed to fit into an hour-long show, so there's little time for house hijinks,. After a quick look back at last week's upsets,  we get right into the background on tonight's first matchup. Training sequence! Chris Saunders is a stand-up guy, and though he was Faber's last pick, his coach now says he could be one of the toughest. We get some heart-breaking background on Saunders' tough childhood, then cut to him emoting on the topic to unlikely life coach Andy Ogle. Team Cruz' training sequence focuses on Vi...

On the heels of tonight’s successful STRIKEFORCE® event at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., the Ultimate Fighting Championship® announced that it will return to the venue on Wednesday, July 11 with an action-packed card. Headlined by an explosive five-round fight between middleweight contenders Mark Munoz and Chris Weidman, the event will also showcase San Jose’s own Jon Fitch battling Aaron Simpson in welterweight action. All four competitors were standouts in collegiate wrestling and have since made the impressive transition to mixed martial arts. DWI= Driving While Intoxicated DUI= Driving Under the Influence While Intoxicated generally refers to booze, can Under the Influence refer to other substances? I'm just playing a little armchair attourney here....

I don't think any fighter is interested in fighting the sane guy 4x... Especially if he just almost beat you in the 3rd meeting

    Jesus take the wheel?

155 is the most stacked weight class in MMA ... I would love to see Gilbert take on Clay Guida, Melvin Guillard, Jim Miller, BJ Penn, Gray Maynard, Frankie Edgar, Donald Cerrone, Joe Lauzon, Dennis Siver. Diego Sanchez, Kenny Florian, et. al. I know those guys are in UFC, but anyone not currently holding or fighting for the UFC lightweight belt would almost certainly be interested in fighting a guy like Melendez and the fact that they are both Zuffa promotions would make it possible. Kudos to Josh Thompson ... he made it a very entertaining fight, but enough is enough. A fighter has a limited shelf life, and Gil has already invested enough of his training for and beating on Thompson. Move on already ......

Did you see the xray of Barnett's hand? That was brutal. No wonder he was in so much pain. The bone is off to the side, and pushed backwards so the two broken ends overlap at least a half inch. This kind of behavior (plus Faber's effort against Brown with two broken hands) make me so proud of this sport. It seems like in other sports, they scrape their knee and come out of the game. These guys literally change the shape of their skeleton in a fight and keep going. Respect....

If I were Gil I would feel same way. I beat this guy two out of three times and the last two times in a row, I don't want to do it again. Close or not I won. Get me some new competition or if you insist on me beating him for third time pay me more money or some other incentive....

You find another 155er in SF that can go all.5 & do that much damage to Gilbert and I would say no 4th fight. but I do not think they can.

His response after the fight was telling. Right before they got to post fight interview they said something about a fourth fight and Gil said "Yeah, whatever." and then quickly changed the subject

Even though I don't he won the fight (can't really say he lost either), I have to agree that this should end the trilogy. Thompson looked great, but it's someone elses turn now. Pat Healy?

for the record, I think ALL the HW's coming over from SF are a much needed and much welcome addition to the UFC. The more we get all the top guys into one org, the better off this sport will be IMO.

The adage has long been that mixed martial arts is safer than boxing. The oft-repeated idea is that when boxers are knocked down, they're given 10 seconds to stand back up and take more concussive blows. In MMA, in many cases, the fight is over shortly after a fighter hits the deck. But the science is not bearing this out. As the long-term effects of concussions increasingly become a front-burner issue in sports, there has been a steady stream of new findings in brain health science that are particularly relevant to combat athletes. There's much more mystery than we thought behind why some fighters develop degenerative brain disease and some don't, and why it seems to drive some athletes to the brink of self-destruction. Dr. Charles Bernick is heading up the Professional Fighters Brain Health Study at the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas. The study is looking at the brains of hundreds of fighters to identify when and how contact becomes a problem for figh...
